Flashcards or a quiz? Pick the tool for the job

People pick a mode by mood. Tired? Swipe cards. Anxious? Start a quiz. That is fine for five minutes. It is a weak plan for a whole course.

Flashcards and quizzes do different jobs. Mix them on purpose, not because one button was closer.

What flashcards are for

A card asks one thing and waits for one answer. Names, formulas, verb forms, steps in a process, the difference between two terms. You say it, then you check.

That is retrieval. Fast. Honest. Easy to repeat on a bus. Bad cards fail here: a whole paragraph on the back, or a prompt so vague you could answer anything.

What quizzes are for

A quiz makes you choose. Multiple choice, true or false, a short written line. You see traps. You feel time. You practice the shape of a test, not just a single fact.

Quizzes are weaker for first learning. You can guess. You can recognize the right option without being able to say it. Use them after the cards have done the first pass.

A simple switch rule

  • New chapter: cards first. You need to produce the idea, not spot it.
  • You keep mixing two terms: make one contrast card, then a short quiz on both.
  • Exam in two weeks: more quizzes and one timed run. The test will not swipe for you.
  • You scored well but still feel shaky: go back to cards on the misses only.

If a quiz feels easy because the wording looks familiar, that is recognition. Say the answer before you look at the options, even if you have to mumble it.

One week, both tools

  • Day you meet the topic: generate the set, clean weak cards, do one card pass.
  • Next day: cards on the red pile, then a short quiz.
  • Midweek: quiz only, write down every miss.
  • Before a class test: one timed quiz, then cards on those misses.

In Quiz Genius the same upload becomes cards and questions. You do not rebuild the material when you switch modes. You switch the pressure.

What not to do

  • Do not run only quizzes for a month and call it studying. Guessing hides holes.
  • Do not live in cards forever if the real exam is timed and multiple choice.
  • Do not make 200 cards and a 80-question quiz the night you first see the chapter.

Pick one lecture from this week. Download Quiz Genius, make a set, do ten minutes of cards tonight and a short quiz tomorrow. That is enough to feel the difference.
